History of Drills

35,000 BC was the year of discovery for the generation of man, as it was at this period that rotary tools became of importance to them, having discovered their benefits. Many ancient civilizations from various parts of the world were involved in what seems like the evolution of drills, having used a pointed rock spun the two hands as a drill to make holes in another material or to drive holes through them. This is what actually started the evolutionary trend of drills with a smooth stick joined to a flint point part of the initial forms or ways in which the hand drills were constructed. As years and more years passed, bow drill (Strap-drills), core drill, and pump-drill, churn drill were all parts of the history of this great tool.

However with the advancement in technology, and with the development of the electric motor, there was a turnaround in what drills looked like with the electric drill coming into place in 1889. The invention of the electric drill was made possible through the contributions of Arthur James Arnot and William Blanch Brain to humanity. In 1895, the first ever drill which was portable to handle and often called portable handheld drill was invented by Wilhem and Carl Fein who were brothers from Stuttgart, Germany. Black and Decker however took this trend of invention to another better level with the creation of drills that were triggered using switch and had a pistol-like grip in 1917. Furthermore, the best cordless drill for the money and all we have now are just modifications to the functioning of these models of drills which however are the foundation to the drills we have now whether cordless, corded or electric.

What Are Drills?

A drill is a tool sometimes with multipurpose functions, and this is because you can either attach a cutting tool to it or a driving tool, and its main functions involves using it to fasten materials together or to bore holes in them. Unlike the conventional drills, a cordless drill stays different from others with its ability to use rechargeable batteries, however it is a sun-type of electric drill. This is often referred to as the most common type of drill, however it can be available in different configuration e.g. hammer drill type of configuration. The presence of clutch on the handle of cordless drills enables it to drive screws into various materials correctly and fittedly without posing a threat to the materials by damaging it. The advance in technology is probably the backbone of this development as 21st century batteries are created and made use of in these drills to have more drilling performance, however when drilling larger diameters like (12-25mm wide diameter), the batteries drain faster. With these cordless drills for optimum performance you might need to have one or more extra packs of battery to keep you working, while you are making use of other packs you keep the extra ones charging so as to be able to substitute them in when the one in use runs down. Normally, charging these batteries could take up to an hour, imagine waiting an hour at several intervals just to get your cordless back to work, but with the advent of Fast Charge, you could have your spare packs working in less than 20 minutes. There are several types of batteries used in cordless drills and they include;

  • Nickel-Cadmium Batteries (NiCd)

With no technological development having 100% efficiency, NiCd batteries have been in existence way before the other types and this makes them readily available and cheap to purchase. They have some disadvantages that might make you have a second thought on whether you should select them over other types and their disadvantages include

  1. They have short lasting life often discharging itself when not in use.
  2. They contribute to environmental pollutions on disposal
  3. They experience short circuiting due to the development of dendrite in them.
  • Lithium-ion Batteries

Unlike the NiCd, they have gathered fame for themselves with their performance and not their years of existence, they are however more effective and becoming quite popular because

  1. They have Short Charging time
  2. They last longer than NiCd batteries
  3. They have low weight
  4. They hold charge for a longer period of time even when not in use than NiCd batteries, lasting for about 2 years unlike the 1 or 4 months that Lithium-ion batteries will.

Accessories That Are Used With Drills

Having said Drills have many functions and can be used in quite a number of ways, this cannot be possible unless with a few tweaks and adjustments, maybe addition to the tool

  1. Rotary Cleaning Brushes
  2. Rotary Polishing Discs
  3. Water Pump
  4. Screw-driving tips (which could be flathead or Philips etc.)
  5. Nibblers
  6. Rotary Sanding Discs

What are Cordless Drills and Various Parts of A Cordless Drill

Power tools are used to insert and remove screws also to drill holes. It is essential to have a knowledge of what the cordless Drill is made of and its constituent parts. • Left-Right Switch ( usually integrated or apart)
  • Soft Start
  1. Clutch and Torque Adjustment

Effective and dynamic in style, the cordless drill has found its way into the hearts of many people usually found in all homes service various functions.

Types of Cordless Drills

There are diverse brands of cordless drills however all these brands can be grouped into two broad groups and they are;

  1. Standard Cordless Drill Drivers
